The revamped rest home includes a range of new facilities and provides a spruced up environment for about 100 hard working horses and rescue horses who are all retired now, and are currently being looked after by the charity...

The equine charity, the world’s oldest, was established in 1886 as the Home of Rest for Horses...

Its founder Ann Lindo, who was inspired by the novel Black Beauty, set up the charity to help London's working horses...

Historically the charity went on to care for thousands of working horses including taxi cab horses, pit ponies, police horses and war horses serving in World War One...

The latter, the plight of which has been brought to a global audience in recent years courtesy of the Michael Morpurgo book War Horse, the Stephen Spielberg film of the same name, as well as a smash hit stage production...

Along with Princes Anne, Joey, the star of the National Theatre’s War Horse production, was also present to support the charity’s reopening...

The Horse Trust’s Chief Executive, Jeanette Allen, described the reopening attended by hundreds of supporters, and the much needed new facilities, as the start of a “new era” for the charity...

The Horse Trust based at Speen, Buckinghamshire, in England provides a place of retirement for working horses including horses from charities such as the Riding for the Disabled Association...

The charity also gives sanctuary to horses, donkeys and ponies that have suffered and need special care and attention...

Funded entirely by voluntary donations, The Horse Trust also supports research to advance knowledge of equine diseases, and improve treatments for horses worldwide...

The Horse Trust also provides equine welfare training for professionals and owners...

The charity is open to the public, Thursday to Sunday, from 2pm to 4pm...

On Sunday June 16 The Horse Trust is also holding a special Horses, Hounds and Heroes Family Fun Day, celebrating the work of military and police horses... (and their handlers)...
