Executive Director Gerald Seligman says the donation provides the welcome opportunity to go from “talk about the needs and priorities of audio preservation to concerted action.

"With this contribution we can now put up our basic structure, begin enacting the preservation plan and give out our first grants. We're committed to doing that right away..."

Grammy winner White is best known as a member of the White Stripes, and latterly as a record label boss.

The musician's contribution will help the foundation that is seeking the long-term preservation of the nation’s audio history...

The foundation has since appealed to others to make donations to the fledging non-profit organisation... especially those in the recording industry, including record companies and artists.

The NRPF aims to help thwart a stream of losses of American radio, music and recorded sound heritage that have reached a critical point due to the rapid deterioration of unique original materials, especially analogue formats...

Precious artistic and cultural recordings are under threat of being lost for ever with the need to transfer data to digital media.

The foundation's mission goes beyond music to include radio, speeches, poetry, spoken word, oral histories, and more.

The charity's board also includes the musician T-Bone Burnett and other leading creative and industry figures.

The NRPF is an independent, non-profit established by the US Congress in order to support national audio archives...
