Greenpeace’s campaign to secure the Arctic as a conservation area to be protected from oil drilling and industrial fishing has reached 3 million supporters and is rising...

3,111,212 signatures are currently behind the environmental charity’s campaign, that was launched a year ago at the Rio Earth Summit with backing from Richard Branson, Penelope Cruz, Robert Redford and others...

Initial signatories included actress/Greenpeace activist Lucy Lawless who also took part in a direct action, scaling an Arctic drilling rig last year.

The campaign launch was in response to plans by companies to drill for oil in the Arctic...

The charity campaign has captured the imagination of the public and continues to go from strength to strength...

After reaching three million signatures Greenpeace is now seeking a target of five million names for its petition... and hopes to achieve victory for its aims...

The campaign has benefited from massive global support; and in April Greenpeace planted a flag and a casket containing signatures from the petition 4km beneath the ice at the North Pole, as a statement of its intent to safeguard the unspoilt landscape...

The charity is pressing global leaders including President Obama to ensure the Arctic is made off limits to industrial exploitation, and is fundraising for its long-term campaign...

As well as being one of the world’s greatest wildernesses the Arctic's ice helps stabilise the planet’s climate...

The Greenpeace campaign wants environmental protections in place sooner rather than later, and that includes a ban on oil drilling in the Arctic, limits on unsustainable fishing, and a global sanctuary in the central Arctic Ocean, as part of a sustained developed plan to protect Arctic biodiversity...
