Charlottesville-area nonprofits will get $50,000 in grants from a new philanthropy class at the University of Virginia’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, as students learn the ins and outs of giving away money.

The grants will be announced at a Tuesday luncheon. An anonymous foundation donated the money so that students could give it away again to community groups.

Students in Philanthropy: Private Initiatives for the Public Good spent the semester deciding who would get the money, mirroring the workings of a private philanthropic foundation.
